Extensive measures implemented in the crackdown on Islamist terror in May

Austria’s domestic intelligence and security authorities carried out a nationwide operation against Islamist extremism and terrorism during May 2026. The campaign involved six arrests, 14 house searches, and more than 40 preventive interventions targeting individuals considered security risks. The goal was to weaken Islamist networks operating within the country and gather intelligence for ongoing investigations.

According to the Austrian authorities, the arrested suspects—five males aged 14 to 45 and one 16-year-old female—are suspected of offenses linked to Islamist extremism, including membership in a terrorist organization, incitement to terrorism, dissemination of ISIS propaganda, and endorsement of terrorist acts. During the searches, investigators seized electronic devices, documents, extremist clothing, and weapons such as folding and combat knives.

The operation also included preventive measures ahead of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna. Since mid-April, authorities had imposed more than 140 reporting obligations, conducted over 40 risk-awareness interviews, and held more than 15 security dialogues, particularly in Vienna and Lower Austria.

The campaign culminated in a nationwide “Joint Action Day” on 27 May 2026, coordinated by Austria’s domestic intelligence service and judicial authorities. On that day alone, authorities executed three arrests and six house searches, while prisons simultaneously carried out searches of inmates detained under anti-terrorism legislation. Austrian officials described Islamist extremism as one of the country’s most significant security threats and emphasized the importance of close cooperation between intelligence, police, and judicial institutions.

Beran Aliji and Arda K. convicted for terrorism

Beran Aliji, a 21-year-old Austrian, was convicted by the Wiener Neustadt Regional Court of planning an Islamist attack on a Taylor Swift concert in Vienna in 2024, which was thwarted at the eleventh hour. After a month-long trial in Austria, he was sentenced to 15 years in jail. He also admitted to plotting an attack in Dubai that was never carried out. Following an intelligence tip-off from the CIA, Aliji was arrested on 7 August 2024, the day before the first of three planned concerts by the US pop star in Vienna.

Aliji and a second defendant, Slovakian citizen Arda K, were also found guilty of aiding and abetting attempted murder for allegedly encouraging a third man, Hasan E, during a terrorist knife attack in Mecca. Arda K was sentenced to 12 years in prison. The pair pleaded guilty to, or were convicted of, travelling and training for terrorist purposes, terrorist association, and belonging to a criminal organisation.

Prosecutors accused Beran Aliji of following ISIS video instructions on how to make a shrapnel bomb and producing a small amount of the explosive triacetone peroxide, as well as attempting to illegally purchase weapons for the planned attack, including a machine gun and hand grenades.

The court heard that the three men, who were school friends, had planned to carry out one attack each in the Middle East before the Swift concerts in March 2024: Beran A in Dubai, Arda K in Istanbul, and Hasan E in Mecca.

While each travelled to their designated city, only Hasan E went through with an attack. He was arrested on suspicion of stabbing a security official at Mecca’s Grand Mosque. He is still in custody in Saudi Arabia.

Islamic State Beran Aliji supporter accused of plotting a terrorist attack at a Taylor Swift concert

A suspected Islamic State supporter accused of plotting a terrorist attack at a Taylor Swift concert allegedly planned to detonate a bomb hidden inside a Red Bull can, a court has heard.

Beran Aliji, 21, is due to go on trial in Austria charged with joining a terrorist organisation, preparing explosives and attempting to procure firearms illegally – offences that could see him jailed for up to 20 years if convicted.

Prosecutors say the Austrian-Macedonian dual national had devised a chilling plan to massacre fans gathered outside the singer’s Vienna concert in August 2024, targeting thousands as they queued to enter the stadium.

Investigators allege he intended to drive his VW Beetle into crowds using a fake police siren and flashing blue light to breach security, before detonating an explosive device – reportedly concealed in a drinks can – and launching a knife attack.

But the concerts were cancelled just one day before the opening night after armed police swooped on Aliyi’s family home in Ternitz, following what has been reported as a tip-off from US intelligence.

Authorities say Aliyi had sworn allegiance to the leader of Islamic State on July 7, 2024 – exactly one month before his arrest.
