Hamas member Yousif C. arrested in Copenhagen

A Danish national named Yousif C. was arrested by Danish police in the vicinity of Copenhagen. This arrest was based on a European arrest warrant that was issued by an investigating judge of the German Federal Court of Justice on 22 May 2026.

Yousif C. is a member of the terrorist organisation Hamas. In July 2025, he handed over five pistols and ammunition to Abed Al G., who was prosecuted separately.

He then handed the firearms over to Mohammed A., who was also being prosecuted separately, for onward transport to Vienna. This served as preparation for Hamas assassination attempts on Israeli or Jewish institutions in Germany and Europe.

The accused will appear before the investigating judge of the Federal Court of Justice following his transfer to Germany.

28-year-old woman sentenced to five years in prison

A 28-year-old woman was found guilty of being recruited by Islamic State and receiving weapons training from the militant group. She was sentenced to five years in prison by the court in Aarhus.

Zahra Halane, who was born in Aarhus to Somali parents, travelled to Syria in 2014, where she married an Islamic State fighter. The man died in combat, but the couple had a child together. The woman and her son were evacuated from a Syrian prison camp in October 2024. Initially, only the son was permitted to come to Denmark.

The boy is a Danish citizen, whereas Halane was administratively stripped of her Danish citizenship while in Syria.

However, the Supreme Court ruled that evacuating the boy without his mother would be incompatible with human rights. Zahra Halane has pleaded not guilty, claiming that she was forced to marry an Islamic State fighter.

Nevertheless, the court disregarded her explanation and found that she had voluntarily travelled to Syria to join the caliphate. The prosecution also demanded that she be deported from Denmark. However, Zahra Halane escaped with only a warning about deportation.

Two men arrested for alleged financing of Hamas

Copenhagen police have arrested two men suspected of raising funds for Hamas, an activity that Danish authorities consider to be financing terrorism. The capital’s police force announced on its social media accounts that a 28-year-old man was arrested, while a 59-year-old man was already in custody “on suspicion of financing terrorism”.

The latter has played a significant role in public debate in the Nordic country for years, but his identity has been kept hidden for security reasons. Both are accused of having raised approximately 760,000 euros through a network of Danish and foreign organizations.

Danish woman sentenced for expressing support for Hamas attack

A Danish woman has been given a suspended prison sentence for publicly supporting Hamas’ attack on Israel on 7 October 2023. Following an appeal, the Western High Court increased her sentence from 40 to 60 days’ suspended imprisonment.

During the initial trial, the woman stated that, if she had indeed made the comments in question, her intention had been to express solidarity with the Palestinian people rather than to endorse the attack itself.

A 28-year-old man was remanded in custody in Denmark on suspicions of purchasing drones to be used in a Hamas “terrorist attack,” Danish intelligence says.

PET said the case has links to both Hamas and criminal gangs in Denmark, and is related to a number of arrests made in December 2023 as part of an operation to prevent a suspected planned “terrorist attack.”

Six people were ordered detained at the time, four in absentia, among them the 28-year-old man, who Danish media reports said was a prominent figure in organized crime in Copenhagen. According to public broadcaster DR, the suspect had been extradited from Lebanon over a separate double murder case.

Syrian Mohamed Hassan Ahmed sentenced to six years and six months for promoting terror

A man, now aged 27, was sentenced to six years and six months in prison for distributing propaganda material for the Islamic State (IS) over a period of more than a year.

Mohamed Hassan Ahmed, a Syrian national, came to Denmark in 2015, and a few years later he began violating Danish anti-terrorism legislation. Between 2017 and 2019, he helped a friend from Syria gain access to communication platforms such as WhatsApp and Telegram. This friend was affiliated with IS.

Between February 2022 and May 2023, Ahmed disseminated propaganda material for IS. He helped create videos discussing the killing of infidels, and created and managed Telegram profiles. Propaganda material for IS was also shared from these profiles.

One of the propaganda videos features footage of Rasmus Paludan, the founder of the party Stram Kurs, which is strongly critical of immigration, speaking while police officers are watching the event. Paludan’s words cannot be heard in the video, which instead reads out excerpts from the Quran.

27-year-old man from the Copenhagen charged with promoting terror online

The Minister of Justice has accepted the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s recommendation to bring charges against a 27-year-old man from the Copenhagen area for violating Section 114 e, first sentence, of the Criminal Code by promoting the activities of the terrorist organisation Islamic State (IS) on several occasions.

Between October 2017 and March 2019, the man is accused of creating and facilitating social media profiles, email accounts and phone numbers for two individuals associated with IS. Furthermore, he is accused of being part of a pro-IS group between August 2022 and May 2023, during which time he participated in preparing and disseminating propaganda videos online. Finally, he is accused of working for two media groups between February 2022 and May 2023, during which time he created and administered 26 Telegram profiles from which IS propaganda was disseminated to a large number of channels.

The man has admitted to the facts set out in the charges. The case will therefore be tried as a confession case pursuant to Section 831 of the Administration of Justice Act, whereby an indictment can be brought at the court hearing if the defendant continues to plead guilty.

A man from Herlev broke the law when he posted a comment on an Ekstra Bladet Facebook post on 11 October 2023, following Hamas’ attacks on Israel.

According to special prosecutor Martin Stassen, the Glostrup Court determined that his comment expressed endorsement of terrorism. The man was sentenced to 40 days of suspended imprisonment. The man admitted writing the comment, but denied being guilty of terror endorsement.

He stated that he was unaware of the events of 7 October and that the Ekstra Bladet post referred to an attack which had been defined as terrorism by the courts. He claimed that he had not read the article.

Verdicts in the cases of condoning terrorism

In the wake of Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, indictments have been filed in 18 cases of approval of a terrorist act.

Three people have so far been sentenced to unconditional imprisonment, three have received a suspended sentence, and three have been acquitted.

    Suspended sentences:

A 29-year-old woman was sentenced to 40 days in prison on December 20 in the Court in Esbjerg for writing “Best news to wake up to” followed by five emojis in the shape of the Palestinian flag. This happened in a comment on a post on Ekstra Bladet’s Facebook page with the headline “Live: Israel attacked with missiles”.

A 16-year-old girl was sentenced to 30 days of suspended prison in the Court of Aalborg on October 29 for writing “Yass” in a comment on the same post on Ekstra Bladet’s Facebook page. “Yass” was followed by a smiley with heart eyes and an emoji with the Palestinian flag. The verdict has been appealed.

A 19-year-old woman participated in a demonstration at Christiansborg Palace, where she was asked on TV if she was angry that Hamas had committed terrorist attacks. “I’m super happy that Hamas made that decision,” was the answer. The woman was sentenced to five months’ suspended prison in Copenhagen City Court.

    Sentenced unconditionally:

A 30-year-old man was sentenced to nine months in prison in Copenhagen City Court in August for saying, among other things, at a demonstration and on Hizb ut-Tahrir’s YouTube channel: “Remember what you have seen” and “Let it be an eternal memory.” The sentence has been appealed.

An influencer’s Snapchat video, in which he celebrated the attack with music and dancing, was sentenced to four months in prison by the Copenhagen City Court. On July 1, the High Court changed the sentence to six months in prison.

A 60-year-old man’s statement to BT that it was a “super attack” has also resulted in an unconditional prison sentence of five months at the Copenhagen City Court.

    Acquitted:

A 28-year-old woman wrote on Politiken’s Facebook page: “There has been war for 73 years but only NOW is Hamas really fighting back. With good reason!”. She was responding to an article about 7,000 dead children in Gaza. The woman was acquitted by the Court in Odense. She had not intended to violate the provision. The prosecution has appealed the case.

A 33-year-old imam participated in a debate program on 24syv. The imam spoke, among other things, about reactions to the Hamas attack on Israel, and the 30-year-old said that he did not think it was something to be cheered about, but he “saw it as a necessary evil”. The Copenhagen City Court did not believe that it had the character of explicit approval.

A 28-year-old woman wrote in a comment in a Facebook group “Hamas (followed by four hearts) They are the only ones fucking doing anything.” The court in Hjørring found it not proven that the words were linked to the terrorist attack

Former Syrian fighter sentenced to 9 years and 6 months for terrorism-related offences

The Eastern High Court has changed the life sentence of a former Syrian fighter to 9 years and 6 months for terrorism-related offences, while acquitting him of treason. The court found proven, among other things, attempted recruitment to IS, illegal residence in a conflict area, and terrorist threats, while ne bis in idem did not prevent prosecution.

The court also found that the defendant had been recruited and had participated in the IS armed forces between 2013 and 2017. There was dissent on several counts.

However, the defendant was acquitted of treason under Section 101a of the Danish Penal Code. A minority of jurors found that there was no proven intent in relation to Denmark’s military involvement in Syria and, under the voting rules, the defendant was acquitted.

A 50-year-old man has been sentenced to five months in prison by the Copenhagen City Court for statements made in a podcast. According to Copenhagen Police prosecutors, who shared information about the case on the social media X, the man described Hamas’s terrorist attack against Israel on October 7, 2023, as “praiseworthy.”

The court found that the statement was contrary to the law and warranted a prison sentence. Following the verdict, the 50-year-old chose to appeal with a view to being acquitted.

Denmark repatriated a mother and her child; she was arrested after upon arrival

Denmark has announced the repatriation of a mother and her eight-year-old son, the child of a deceased ISIS fighter, from a detention camp in Syria.

According to the Danish foreign ministry, they arrived in Denmark following an agreement with local Kurdish authorities in north-eastern Syria.

The mother had agreed to the repatriation and was arrested upon arrival on suspicion of terrorism offences. The child was handed over to social services. The woman was born in Denmark in 1998 as a Somali citizen, acquiring Danish citizenship in 2001. She subsequently moved to Britain at the age of four and has not lived in Denmark since.

In 2014, aged 16, she travelled to Syria, where she joined ISIS. The Danish intelligence service PET concluded that she had received weapons and combat training in Syria, which is why her citizenship was revoked.

20-year-old man from Valby sentenced to four years for promoting the Islamic State

A 20-year-old man was sentenced by the court in Frederiksberg for promoting the Islamic State. He was arrested following a tip-off from the US. A jury at Frederiksberg Court ruled that he had converted to Islam and supported the Islamic State.

He violated a provision of the Criminal Code eight times by promoting an organisation that commits terrorist acts. This occurred while he was active on Instagram, according to the ruling. For example, he encouraged another person to attack a pride parade, Jews, or Shia Muslims.

He has been sentenced to four years in prison, and several family members of the frail 20-year-old have come forward to observe the trial.

They heard the court conclude that Bjarke Magnus Thorsen was radicalised and a supporter of the Islamic State when, over the course of two months from November 2021 to January 2022, he wrote to others on Instagram about manuals for making bombs, among other things.

During the trial, the defendant pleaded not guilty. However, the court does not consider his claim that he disassociates himself from the Islamic State’s violent actions to be credible.

Influencer Ahmad Elchaabi sentenced for endorsing Hamas’ terror attack

Influencer Ahmad Elchaabi, also known as Ahmarni, has been sentenced to four months’ suspended imprisonment and community service for approving terrorism.

The verdict was handed down at Copenhagen City Court.

On 8 October 2023, Elchaabi shared a video on Snapchat, which has 80,000 followers, including many children. In the video, he said, among other things, ‘There are people down there who still haven’t been blown up. But 250 pieces, that’s not bad at all”, referring to the attack by Hamas on a music festival the previous day, in which more than 350 civilians were killed, many more were injured and several hostages were taken by the attackers back to Gaza.

According to the summary of the judgement, Elchaabi explained in court that he was unaware of the facts surrounding the attack and did not realise that it involved the killing of civilians at a festival. Furthermore, he stated that his Snapchat post was intended solely as humour and satire. He would not have shared the video if he had known that civilians had been killed.

20-year-old man charged with promoting terror through social media

The Minister of Justice has accepted the Public Prosecutor’s Office’s recommendation to indict a 20-year-old Danish man from the Greater Copenhagen area for breaching Section 114e of the Criminal Code by promoting the activities of the terrorist organisation ISIL (also known as ISIS) by sharing terrorist-related and other militant Islamist material with several individuals abroad.

The man is charged with nine offences committed between November 2021 and January 2022.

According to the indictment, the man used an Instagram profile to send links to and images of IS propaganda, as well as material on the production of weapons and explosives. He also advised people abroad about martyrdom and possible targets for attacks. This material was shared with a total of four other Instagram profiles.

“It is a serious matter when someone shares material that could lead to terrorist attacks being committed. In the view of the prosecution, disseminating militant Islamist, terrorist-related material and propaganda for IS in this way helps to promote IS’s activities,” says State Attorney Lise-Lotte Nilas, the State Attorney in Copenhagen.

Danish police link suspected terror plan to Hamas

December’s raids by Danish police and security services, in which three arrests were made in Denmark and one in the Netherlands, have connections to Hamas, according to Danish media reports.

A prosecutor at the Østre Landsret High Court said that the police consider that suspected plans to commit an act of terror, which formed the basis for the police raids, can be traced to Hamas.

Police and intelligence service PET believe that seven people, including two 20-year-old women, were involved in the plot.

Three people detained as a result of the arrests remain in police custody, including the two young women as well as a 58-year-old man.

Three others are arrested in absentia, while one suspect is free after the court found there were not grounds to continue his preliminary detention.

Denmark and Germany arrest terror suspects planning attacks in Europe

Four individuals were reportedly detained in Germany and the Netherlands on suspicion of plotting attacks on Jewish institutions across Europe. Abdelhamid Al A. and Ibrahim El-R., both born in Lebanon and Egyptian Mohammed B. were arrested by German federal police in Berlin. Nazih R., a Dutch national, was arrested in Rotterdam on a European arrest warrant. Prosecutors did not reveal their family names.

Three others were arrested in Denmark on separate terrorism charges.

Danish security officials said there is no direct link between the two sets of arrests. Danish authorities said the arrest of three suspects in Denmark and a fourth in the Netherlands had prevented a “terror” attack.

Danish police did not go into details about the suspects or give any indication as to the possible target of the alleged plot. “It was a group that was planning an act of terror,” Flemming Drejer, head of operations at the PET intelligence service, told a news conference.

Over the summer, Denmark and neighbouring Sweden became the target of anger in several Muslim countries after a slew of protests in Scandinavia involving burnings and desecrations of the Quran.

The Eastern High Court has sentenced 30-year-old Adam Touhou to five years in prison for recruiting his friend to commit acts of terrorism. He will also be stripped of his citizenship and permanently expelled from the country.
In 2021, the Copenhagen City Court sentenced him to six years in prison for the crime. The High Court jury has therefore given him a milder sentence.
During the sentencing, the presiding judge stated that there had been disagreement regarding the length of the sentence. Twelve out of eighteen votes were in favour of sentencing the defendant to five years in prison.
Three votes were in favour of upholding the district court’s sentence of six years in prison, while three votes were in favour of a sentence of four years. However, the judges and jurors were in agreement regarding expulsion.
