Austria’s domestic intelligence and security authorities carried out a nationwide operation against Islamist extremism and terrorism during May 2026. The campaign involved six arrests, 14 house searches, and more than 40 preventive interventions targeting individuals considered security risks. The goal was to weaken Islamist networks operating within the country and gather intelligence for ongoing investigations.

According to the Austrian authorities, the arrested suspects—five males aged 14 to 45 and one 16-year-old female—are suspected of offenses linked to Islamist extremism, including membership in a terrorist organization, incitement to terrorism, dissemination of ISIS propaganda, and endorsement of terrorist acts. During the searches, investigators seized electronic devices, documents, extremist clothing, and weapons such as folding and combat knives.

The operation also included preventive measures ahead of the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna. Since mid-April, authorities had imposed more than 140 reporting obligations, conducted over 40 risk-awareness interviews, and held more than 15 security dialogues, particularly in Vienna and Lower Austria.

The campaign culminated in a nationwide “Joint Action Day” on 27 May 2026, coordinated by Austria’s domestic intelligence service and judicial authorities. On that day alone, authorities executed three arrests and six house searches, while prisons simultaneously carried out searches of inmates detained under anti-terrorism legislation. Austrian officials described Islamist extremism as one of the country’s most significant security threats and emphasized the importance of close cooperation between intelligence, police, and judicial institutions.
