23-year-old Syrian man confesses in court to planning an attack in Berlin

A 23-year-old Syrian man was arrested in Berlin in November 2025 on suspicion of terrorism. The police discovered several items in his apartment for the construction of an explosive device. The Syrian planned an attack in Berlin out of radical Islamist sentiments.

He has generally admitted the allegations before the capital’s regional court. He became radicalized via the Internet and was ultimately “determined” to commit an attack.

According to the indictment, the man is said to have been considering committing a terrorist attack since March 2025 at the latest, which would primarily target Jews living in Berlin and, in his view, “infidels.” He planned to first kill as many Jewish people and non-Muslims as possible with a knife and then carry out a suicide attack with an explosive belt.

The man said at the start of the trial that he came to Germany at the end of 2023 “to work and earn money.” But then his dreams and goals would have changed. He has become increasingly radicalized on platforms like Tiktok. In chats, he informed himself about martyrdom and looked at IS publications, among other things. “The devil was sitting in my head,” said the defendant: “I got my thoughts from ISIS.”

The trial is scheduled for four additional days of hearings until June 5.

Kosovar Erjon S. charged with three attempted murders

A Kosovar teenage jihadist who allegedly wanted to kill “as many Jewish people as possible” was charged with three counts of attempted murder for attacking his teacher, a janitor, and an unknown person near a synagogue, the German Federal Prosecutor’s Office announced.

Identified only as Erjon S., the juvenile suspect was charged on March 31 with assault, aggravated assault, and resisting arrest, in addition to three attempted murder charges. The teenage Islamist allegedly resolved to engage in jihad against “perceived infidels” in Essen, targeting his teacher, in addition to a janitor he knew. He allegedly intended to kill as many Jews as he could afterward.

In September, the teenager allegedly armed himself with a knife and went to an elementary school, where he punched the janitor and sprayed him with pepper spray. The attacker was unable to utilize the knife because the victim reportedly defended himself. After the first assault, Erjon then allegedly attacked a teacher at his vocational college, stabbing her multiple times in the upper body.

Attempting to commit suicide by causing a police officer to kill him and thus to achieve martyrdom, Erjon allegedly ran toward an officer while brandishing his knife. He was shot in the face. Erjon was arrested, and the case was passed over to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office by the Essen Public Prosecutor’s Office.

23-year-old Syrian national charged with terrorism

The Berlin General Prosecutor’s Office has filed charges with the Berlin District Court I – State Security Chamber – against a 23-year-old Syrian national. He is accused of preparing a serious act of violent subversion (terrorism) in conjunction with terrorism financing in one case, as well as distributing propaganda for terrorist organizations in four cases.

By March 2025 at the latest, the accused allegedly formed the intent, based on radical Islamist ideology, to carry out a terrorist attack in Berlin. He also reportedly used internet platforms such as Telegram and TikTok to research views on martyrdom and so-called Jihad. After allegedly researching the construction of explosive and incendiary devices, he is said to have exchanged messages regarding the planned attack with an unidentified interlocutor.

Furthermore, the accused is charged with publishing videos on social media in March and October 2025 that were accompanied by so-called Nasheeds of the Islamic State.

The accused, originally from Syria, is said to have first entered Germany in December 2023. He was granted subsidiary protection in September 2024, which was subsequently revoked in January 2026 by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). The accused, who has no prior criminal record, has been in pre-trial detention since his arrest on November 1, 2025.

Syrian convicted to 13 years in prison for stabbing a Spanish tourist

A court convicted a Syrian man of stabbing and seriously wounding a Spanish tourist at Berlin’s Holocaust Memorial just over a year ago, and sentenced him to 13 years in prison.

The 20-year-old defendant, whom authorities have identified only as Wassim Al M., was convicted on charges including attempted murder and attempted membership in a foreign terrorist organization.

The Berlin district court found that he traveled from Leipzig to Berlin on February 21, 2025, to carry out an attack in the name of the Islamic State terror group.

The defendant said during his trial that he had regretted the attack immediately, and asserted that he had traveled to Berlin under pressure from an online acquaintance he had gotten to know as he watched IS videos.

The defendant arrived in Germany in 2023 as an unaccompanied minor and successfully applied for asylum, investigators have said. He lived in Leipzig. He was arrested nearly three hours after the attack when he approached officers with blood on his hands and clothes.

German police arrest five men over Christmas market attack plot

On 13 December, German authorities arrested five men suspected of planning a vehicle attack on a Christmas market in the Dingolfing-Landau area of Lower Bavaria.

The five suspects are a 56-year-old Egyptian, three Moroccans aged 30, 28 and 22, and a 37-year-old Syrian. Four of them are now in custody after appearing before a magistrate on Saturday and one was placed in preventive detention. The Egyptian suspect, described as an Islamic preacher, allegedly called for an attack during gatherings at a mosque in the Dingolfing-Landau area. Authorities said the Egyptian suspect urged followers to use a vehicle to kill or injure as many people as possible at a Christmas market during the festive season. Under criminal law, this is currently classified as attempted murder.

The three Moroccan men are suspected of agreeing to carry out the attack, while the Syrian allegedly encouraged them in their plan. Authorities said they are currently assuming an Islamist motivation, though no link to the so-called Islamic State terror group has been established.

The men were arrested near the Suben border crossing on the German-Austrian border, according to multiple media reports.
