Syed Gul Rahman

Syed Gul Rahman was born in Swabi, Pakistan, on January 1, 1976, and was living in Olbia. In 2015, he was accused of aiding and abetting illegal immigration, and of being part of a criminal association composed of several individuals of Pakistani origins across Italy, who trafficked people into Italy illegally and helped them stay by providing them with fake documents or job permits. His arrest was part of a broader operation of the DIGOS to apprehend members of a terrorist cell close to al-Qaeda and other jihadist organisations, operating between Olbia and Rome under the direction of Sultan Wali Khan.
Rahman was arrested in April 2015 and charged with Article 12 of the Italian Immigration Law (D.Lgs. 286/1998) for having aided the illegal immigration of eighty individuals of Pakistani origins from Greece to Italy in June 2010. In particular, Rahman was responsible for securing visas, arranging transportation, and managing the logistical details for large groups of migrants, indicating his prominent role in a wider human trafficking network. He also managed the activities of Ali Muhammad Qasim, Khater Sadiqullah and Hazrat Khan, who instead provided hospitality and general assistance, such as distributing SIM cards. In 2010, phone conversations revealed Rahman had prepared documents for 18-19 individuals in a group of 40, and arranged for the transfer of 80 migrants from Pakistan, even paying for their accommodation and coordinating their transport to Spain. Rahman’s involvement extended to organising the logistics for illegal immigrants once they arrived. In June, 2010, Noor Ul Amin, father of a migrant named Waqas, contacted Rahman, worried that his son had been arrested. Rahman reassured him that Waqas was in Italy and had spoken to him the previous day. Rahman then instructed Muhammad Qasim Ali to pick up Waqas and a group of migrants and arranged for them to be sent to Novara.
Syed Gul Rahman was also charged with Article 12 of the Italian Immigration Law (D.Lgs. 286/1998) for aiding and abetting the illegal immigration of Pakistani citizens Abdur Rehman and Habib-Ur Rahman from 2010 until 2012. According to court documents, Rahman facilitated their illegal immigration by providing the necessary documentation to mask their entry to Italy for business purposes while helping them obtain political asylum and hosting them in Olbia.
In April 2019, at the time of the process of the Court of Assize, Syed Gul Rahman was untraceable.
