Dritan Gjecaj

Dritan Gjecaj

Dritan Gjecaj was born in Korce, Albania, on October 26, 1974 and at the time of the criminal proceedings he was living in Treviglio with his wife Lubjana Gjecaj. He also had a second wife, Arta Kacabuni, who was domiciled in Scansano (GR). Gjecaj was charged with art. 270 bis of the Italian Criminal Code, having contributed to the wedding of Maria Giulia Sergio and Aldo Kobuzi in September 2014 who then left for Syria to enrol within the Islamic State.
Dritan Gjecaj had a marginal role in the Sergio case compared to the other defendants. He was not involved in the initial meeting between Maria Giulia Sergio and Aldo Kobuzi but he hosted Kobuzi, his family and the wedding party the days before the wedding and asked the Imam of the Treviglio mosque to celebrate the marriage ceremony. Since the Imam refused, Dritan offered to hold the wedding in his house.
However, there is no proof of Gjecaj’s ideological beliefs nor of his endorsement of the Islamic State. On the contrary, wiretapped conversations between his wife Lubjana and a friend reveal that Dritan had no intentions of doing jihad and join ISIS and that he strongly opposed Bushra Haik’s lessons. Dritan himself also manifested disapproval towards the Charlie Hebdo attack and ISIS’s conduct in phone conversations and during questioning with the public prosecutor, confirming the absence of radical beliefs. Therefore, Gjecaj was acquitted in 2016 because the alleged criminal offence under art. 270 bis was not committed.
