Iqbal Tasawar
Iqbal Tasawar is a Pakistani citizen born on March 11, 1993, under investigation for international terrorist association according to art. 270 bis comma 2 c.p. of the Italian Criminal Code.
From the documents released by the Tribunal of Genova, it emerges that Iqbal Tasawar appears to be only a recent addition to the Gabar network, although evidence reveals his connection with the most prominent figures, especially with the president Umer Noman, as demonstrated by the geolocation of his mobile phone which has pinpointed him in the Savona area since Autumn 2021. In fact, Tasawar traveled from France to Fabbrico to participate in the meeting of September 2-5, 2021, as well as in the February 2022 meeting.
As explained in the detention order, Tasawar demonstrates clear adherence to Gabar’s ideology, as corroborated by various social media posts. He showed appreciation and solidarity towards the Paris attacker, Zaheer Hassan Mahmood, in various TikTok videos and his posts were clearly shared in a propagandistic act. Tasawar also appeared in videos with Ali Mohsin, Ali Ashan, and Umer Noman.
On October 28, 2021, Tasawar was stopped by the French border police on the Maddalena Pass behind the wheel of a van presumably used to aid and abet illegal immigration. The following month, on November 16, 2021, Tasawar was once again stopped by the Italian Carabinieri in Cairo Montenotte, near the French border. Tasawar was driving with a fake license which resulted in a police report, he was then escorted to the French border but was later released in Italy.
Iqbal Tasawar was then arrested in Genova in June 2022 and was placed under pre-trial detention by the order of the Tribunal of Genova. Once arrested, Tasawar asked for a shortened proceeding and was put on trial on July 12 and 13, 2023 while the judge’s ruling was scheduled for September 18, 2023. In October 2023, he was sentenced for conspiracy to commit terrorism to four years and six months.
